Innovations and technology have been outlined as key elements in advancing civilization, particularly in developing countries. 

This is according to Wilkins Mijiga, Head of Client Coverage at the National Bank of Malawi, who was speaking as guest of honour during a graduation dinner for 16 young engineers from the Africa Drone and Data Academy (ADDA) at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST). 

Mijiga emphasized that embracing technological advancements and innovations is crucial for countries like Malawi to achieve significant development goals.

The ADDA, among others, trains young engineers in drone operations and the development of various innovations aimed at solving identified challenges under what is called Young Engineer Academy. It targets youths in secondary schools.

“I really thank MUST for this programme that exposes the youth to such advanced technologies. It is critical step towards reaching development goals. We have to ensure that we integrate technology and innovation into the country's development strategies,” he said.

Representing MUST Vice Chancellor, Dr. Michael Zimba, who is executive dean of the Malawi Institute of Technology (MIT), highlighted the programme's objective. 

“This programme aims to equip young people with the necessary skills to operate drones and foster innovative ideas that address some of Malawi's pressing challenges,” he said.

The graduation ceremony in Blantyre saw 16 young engineers being awarded certificates after completing a two-week engineering training. 

On their part, the graduates showcased their newly acquired skills and knowledge through various presentations, demonstrating the practical applications of their training.
