Dr Willard Mbewe is a lecturer and research scientist with more than 13 years’ experience in agricultural research for sustainable development. He is a faculty member under the AMS’ Department of Biological Sciences.
Before joining the MUST in 2021, Dr Mbewe worked as Chief Scientist under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s Department of Agricultural Research Services based at Bvumbwe Research Station in Thyolo. He has written and published on crops like sweet potato, cassava, tomatoes, bananas, and potatoes in the domain of plant pathology.
He holds a PhD in Biological Sciences (Agriculture) from Makerere University. He also holds an MSc in Environmental Sciences and BSc in Forestry Sciences from University of Malawi and Mzuzu University, respectively.
Dr Mbewe worked as a PhD research scholar under Dr Stephan Winter’s Virology Laboratory, DSMZ, Germany. He also held a 2.5 years-long PhD research fellowship in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources at Rutgers State University in New Jersey, USA.
He has more than 19 publications to his name (book chapters, original research articles and conference proceedings). He is competent in next-generation sequencing and data analysis; and has basic skills in R programming where he is able to do RNA-SEQ Data Analysis, PCA, Microbial Community Data Analysis (Metagenomics), and GWAS data analytics, among others. His research interests include Environmental Sciences, Microbiology and Agriculture.
