BSc in Meteorology and Climate Science

Program Description

Meteorology and climate science help us in understanding and predicting changes in the Earth’s atmosphere. Malawi as a developing country whose socio-economic development is largely dependent on its agro-based economy, this programme is of utmost importance. Over 85% of the total population in Malawi is dependent upon rain fed agricultural production, which is highly vulnerable to weather and climatic fluctuations. Other sectors, including tourism, disaster management, trade, aviation, and health, are also significantly affected by weather and climate.

This four-year programme has been developed to meet Malawi’s specific needs in meteorology, climate science and atmospheric studies. It combines foundational knowledge with advanced and applied skills, such as monitoring and analysing climate systems, forecasting across various timeframes and locations, climate modeling, studying climate change and future scenarios, and improving communication and dissemination of weather information, early warning systems, and disaster management strategies.

Career Opportunities
Graduates of this programme can pursue careers in media, consultancy, education, agriculture, the military and national meteorological services. As experts in climate science, they will also be well positioned to work in emerging fields related to climate change, such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, carbon monitoring and climate-related transportation systems. The programme has been designed to send out competent and skilled graduates into the industry.
