In a sheer show of humanity, students from Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) Leo clubs on March 4, 2024 donated assorted groceries and food items worth K600,000 to children with disabilities at Chisombezi School for the Deaf and Blind in Chiradzulu.
The two Leo clubs are subsidiaries of Chileka Lion Club in Blantyre.
Before making the donation, MUST and CUNIMA students toured the school’s premises to appreciate its services. They also played various games with the children as one way of interaction.
Speaking after the donation, MUST Leo Club president, Benard Mhango, said the donation and visit were part of showing humanity towards fellow human beings.
“Leo, which stands for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity, is a club which is so passionate about addressing sight and deaf problems. This is the reason we pooled resources from well-wishers to come and donate to these children. We identify challenges people face and find a way to address them and create a better world for them,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the children, school headteacher, Sister Prisca Mangoni, commended the two clubs for their kind gesture, saying the donation will go a long way to uplift the plight of the children.
Sister Mangoni said the school, established in 2004 and currently with 22 learners with various disabilities, offers education to children with deaf and blindness challenges in three categories such as pull-out system, home-based as well as residential education.
