The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) on April 24, 2024 oriented management of the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) on the Access to Information Act (ATIA) and its regulations.

The orientation, initiated by the university, sought to build the capacity of the university team on information management, handling of information requests and sharing and how to put in place enabling structures and systems. 

In his remarks, MHRC Regional Coordinator Victor Khwima said many public institutions are struggling with implementation of the ATIA, mostly due to lack of proper orientation.

“We are therefore pleased with the initiative taken by MUST. In fact, they are the second public university we are orienting on this law. Hopefully, after this they will be ready to fully comply with the law,” said Khwima.

He thanked MUST for its commitment and collaborative efforts in making the training a reality. 

“Your dedication to fostering a culture of openness and accountability within our academic institutions is truly commendable. This proactive approach sets a commendable example for others to follow,” he added. 

On its part, MUST Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Wilson Mandala said as a public university, MUST was very happy to have initiated the process to have its staff oriented on the ATIA. 

“We believe that as we use public resources to run our affairs, we need to be accountable and transparent, thereby promoting democracy. The ATIA promotes this spirit,” he said.

Professor Mandala also thanked MHRC for honouring its request and help MUST staff to know their various roles under the ATIA. 

“We have always wanted to comply with the ATIA but were technically challenged because we needed a deeper understanding of the law for us to effectively comply with it. This is why we highly regard this orientation session,” he said.

After the orientation, MUST with technical support from MHRC will soon develop an information manual. The university is also in the process of compiling a 2023/24 annual report to be presented to the Ministry of Information as required by law.
